Security Training

Training for security
First Aid Requirements
Before you can begin your training as a door supervisor or security guard, it’s essential to hold a valid first aid qualification. This ensures you are prepared to handle any medical emergencies that might arise while on duty. The first aid certification must meet the standards set out by the SIA, typically requiring you to complete at least one day of training covering key skills like CPR, managing bleeding, and dealing with unresponsive individuals. Without this qualification, you won’t be able to enrol in the main training course.
Training Courses
The primary training required is the Level 2 Award for Working as a Door Supervisor or Security Guard in the Private Security Industry. This course provides comprehensive knowledge and skills needed for both roles in the security sector. It covers essential topics, including managing access to venues, monitoring premises, effective communication with customers, and dealing with conflict situations. The training also focuses on understanding the legal and ethical responsibilities of security professionals, preparing for emergencies, and safely using physical intervention techniques if necessary. The course is typically completed over several days and includes both classroom learning and practical assessments to ensure readiness for the role.
Top-Up Training
If you previously held an SIA licence for door supervision or security guarding and it has expired within the last three years, you may need to complete top-up training to renew it. This additional training ensures that you remain up-to-date with the latest industry standards and regulations. It also includes refreshed training on key areas like physical intervention skills and counter-terrorism awareness, which are essential for maintaining public safety in modern security roles.
Once you’ve successfully completed the training and obtained your qualifications, you can apply for the appropriate SIA licence. With this licence, you are qualified to work in various security roles, including at pubs, clubs, retail premises, and events, as well as monitoring and protecting property or people, ensuring their safety and security.
